Fragments of a Bigger Picture: The Process

These built-up layers of sculptural Acrylic Paint skins are a byproduct of the paintings I was working on when mixing colours on my pallet. I had recently started using a material for my pallets that I had not previously used. After the paint had built up on the surface to the point it was too uneven and thick, I wanted to see if I could remove the paint and start with a clean surface again. After trying several methods, I finally managed to remove the thick layer of paint and was pleasantly surprised to see the vibrant image that had been created on the reverse side of the skin I had removed. The surface was glossy and incredibly detailed, showing even the brushstrokes and the blending together of colours that occurred when they were made fluid through the use of water or medium. I was surprised to realize that each pallet skin was a map of the colours and blending of shades of the paintings I was working on at the time. All of this was completely unexpected for me, but a wonderful discovery. At the time, I had no idea how to incorporate them into my work, but I knew they were special, and I loved looking at them even if I never incorporated them into my work. So, I tacked them to my wall each time I removed one until they were eventually taking up too much space in my studio, and I knew I had to find a way to showcase them. Eventually, I came upon the current layout that you see on this page. As can be seen in the examples of the works What Doesn't Kill You 1 & 2. I sometimes add small parts to the skins to accentuate their particular colours and shapes. In these examples, I have added staples and a band-aid with writing on it. I picture these as being wonderful bases for limited intervention with collage. I'm glad that I can make these original one-of-a-kind works available for others to enjoy. Each work comes mounted on a triple-primed black wood frame with clear priming on the back. Each is signed on the front, with the title displayed on the back. They are mounted in 1 1/2 " deep recycled PVC floating frames, wall mounting hardware not included. Frames are available in Black only. Finished frame sizes are 2" larger than listed panel sizes. Example: 11 x 14 panel shown is 13 x 16 inches framed and 14 x 18 is 16 x 20 framed.
